- Evapotranspiration, a type of cap used to contain contamination that is designed to allow air and moisture to pass through it.

- NPL
- National Priorities List. A nation-wide list of Superfund sites with elevated priority for cleanup.
- NRRB
- The National Remedy Review Board. An EPA board that reviews certain Superfund proposed decisions to ensure consistency with Superfund law, regulations, and guidance.
- OU
- Operable Unit. The subparts of a Superfund site based upon type and media (e.g. soil, groundwater) where contamination is found.

- Preliminary Assessment
- RAs
- Remediation Areas. Groups of a contaminated site that have similar character characteristics and can be remediated in similar ways.
- RCRA
- The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The federal law that addresses management, disposal, and treatment of solid and hazardous wastes.
- RfR
- Ready for Reuse. A Ready for Reuse Certificate is a decision document issued by EPA to allow re-development to proceed on a parcel that is part of a Superfund site.
- RI/FS
- Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study. The CERCLA process for investigation of contamination and selection of remedial actions required to ensure protection of human health and the environment at a contaminated facility.
- ROD
- Record of Decision. The decision document that EPA issues to identify the selected remedy for a CERCLA site.
